The Phoenix Evolution from Heat Transfer Products looks to be a great all in one device for you home heating, domestic hot water, and solar preheating. Everything is preplumbed for you so all you have to do is hook it up to your hot water heat system, your domestic hot water system and you can even have one with an internal coil to preheat your tank water with an outdoor solar panel. Looks to be a great system that will work well in cramped utility rooms and take the guess work out of plumbing a solar hot water system effectively. Check out their other heating products as well.

Phoenix Evolution – Heating, DHW and Solar in one unit

Solar hot water systems without pumps and controls could really make installing and using the sun to heat water much more simple. Sunnovations has developed a new product using a passive geyser pump that generates pumping action using just the heat of the sun. This is a closed pressurized system to regulates its own flow rate and automatically shuts down when temperatures get too hot. Would love to try this system out here in Montana when it becomes available and hope that their real world testing goes well. Check them out and I will let you know when the product becomes available.
Marathon Electric Water Heaters

I own a traditional Marathon tank type water heater in my home since it is less expensive than a tankless water heater and it works really well with a solar hot water preheating system. The Marathon has a lifetime warranty on the tank and it will never rust. Only the elements will need to be replaced every once in while and preheating the water means that the element run for much shorter times and will have a much longer life. In the summer I turn off my water heater completely and just use water that has been heated by the sun. I can usually turn it off from June-September saving me alot of energy. Tankless water heaters can lose efficiency with solar preheating, so it is best to stick with a very efficient tank type water heater. Check out their products and I am hoping they will come out with a heat pump water heater soon.
Sun Earth – Solar Hot Water Panels

Capturing the energy from the sun actively takes 2 forms, which includes heating water and heating air. Sun Earth Inc. takes energy from the sun and converts it into heating water that can then provide domestic hot water for your home for most of the year and larger systems can actually supplement radiant heat systems in your home. I have 3 4×10 solar hot water panels on my roof and it actually offsets 80% of the energy for my homes hot water and when there is enough sun, it can also decrease the energy for heating my home through the radiant floors. These can either be roof mounted (like on my house) or ground mounted to get better southern exposure. Check out their products to get more information.
